The 3rd British Congress on Medicine and Spirituality is an opportunity for any professional working in the area of health care, who would like to know more about Medicine and Spirituality. It is also open to members of the public interested in the topic.

In 1948, the World Health Organization defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Since that time spirituality started to become a factor in studies, research and the practice of medicine itself, with a particular growth in interest observed in the last decade. Now the debate about the influence of spirituality in health has become the topic of the moment, with more and more research showing that it is paramount to recognise the importance of religious and spiritual beliefs in the mental health and mental illnesses of patients.

Within this movement, Spirituality has the connotation given to it by William James: the attempt to be in harmony with an unseen order of things. Thus, it consists of physicians and health professionals from the most diverse religious faiths, and even those who have no formal religious ties, but who simply believe in the Supreme Being, explains Dr Marlene Nobre, President of the International Medical Spiritist Association. Dr Nobre is the most prominent Brazilian figure in advocacy for spiritual assistance for Brazilian patients.

In the United States in 2001 it was found that almost two thirds of all medical schools already offered required or elective courses in Religion, Spirituality and Medicine. From Brazil, recent academic articles focused on mental health, have reported quantitative results from research studies. In bringing their experience to the Congress, some of the medical professionals working to bridge Spirituality and Medicine in those countries will join their counterparts from North America, South America and Europe for a series of lectures to promote deeper understanding about combining spirituality into modern medicine.

Together, these scientists will tackle critical issues in relation to consciousness, neuroscience, mood disorders, healing and their relationship to Spirituality. Delegates will also be informed about the latest research in the field. Plus the accomplishments of worldwide doctors, who are ushering in a new era of the whole person and culturally sensitive psychiatric care. The Congress is not only intended to be informative, but designed to challenge current thinking and to stimulate future research.

The 3rd British Congress on Medicine and Spirituality is an opportunity for any professional working in the area of health care, who would like to know more about Medicine and Spirituality.

Among the topics to be discussed are:

Non-locality of consciousness: what do scientific findings say?
The basis of a trans-dimensional physiology
The neuroscience of emotions and healing
Spirituality, anxiety and mood disorders
Open heart, open mind
Will science ever embrace the power of love?
