The desert has inspired many great spiritual teachings, including Christian, Islamic and Jewish. This retreat uses key prayers in the original language, so that you experience their full sound meaning and the essence of these three faiths.
This retreat will include group and solo time, with scope to draw from the peace and beauty of a 70-acre woodland setting. We will use practices from the desert wisdom traditions, such as walking meditations, wazifas (mantras) and simple songs and dances, to deepen our understanding of these teachings in their original form.

The inspiration for this retreat is the seminal book, Desert Wisdom, by Dr Neil Douglas-Klotz, a leading international scholar and spiritual teacher who has re-translated key texts from Middle Eastern spiritual teachings, showing how these languages embody several layers of meaning in each word, and how the sound expresses this. Alan Heeks has studied with Neil since 1997, and has been authorised to teach this material.

Hazel Hill is a secluded 70-acre conservation wood a few miles from Salisbury. Accommodation is in warm basic wooden eco-buildings with a mix of small bedrooms and sleeping lofts, hot showers and compost toilets. Group sessions will be in the beautiful main room, or outdoors.

Alan leads retreats in the Sahara, and we will draw on the desert connection through open campfires under the stars, as well as the teachings. Jo Hanstead will provide musical support. We will share other tasks, such as washing up and cleaning.

The cost for the weekend, including food and accommodation, is £130 (concessions £110). For enquiries and bookings, contact Alan on 01308 425371 or
